Chuan Xiong Cha Tiao San by Blue Poppy’s Great Nature Classics is a formula that comes from Imperial Medical Bureau’s Song dynasty Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang (Formulary of the Pharmacy Service for Benefitting the People of the Taiping Era).
Within this formula, Chuan Xiong frees the flow of the shao yang and jue yin channels on the head and stops pain.
Qiang Huo frees the flow of the tai yang channel on the head and stops pain. Bai Zhi frees the flow of the yang ming channel on the head and stops pain.
Jing Jie and Fang Feng resolve the exterior and dispel wind. Bo He similarly resolves the exterior and dispels wind. However, it also benefits the head and eyes and clears heat due to depression. This why it is considered the sovereign ingredient in this formula.
Gan Cao harmonizes all the other ingredients in the formula.
